Join us for Rheumchat the third Thursday of each month

Simple Tasks hosts a lively monthly Twitter chat on how patients with rheumatic diseases can advocate for their health and other topics related to rheumatic disease. #RheumChats are a great resource for patients looking for an online arthritis support group. Each month we host #RheumChat with a different guest organization. Learn how to join us and find the archived transcripts of our Twitter chats.

For those of you who are new to social media, a Twitter chat is a conversation that takes place LIVE on Twitter where individuals use a designated hashtag (designated by the # symbol) so you can follow along and participate in the conversation. Our official Twitter chat hashtag is #RheumChat.

March 23 at 1:00 PM ET: Healthy Kidneys 101: Tips for Rheumatology Patients

Our March #RheumChat is co-hosted by the National Kidney Foundation. Fueled by passion and urgency, the National Kidney Foundation (NFK) is a lifeline for all people affected by kidney disease. As pioneers of scientific research and innovation, NKF focuses on the whole patient through the lens of kidney health. Relentless in their work, they enhance lives through action, education and accelerating change.

The National Kidney Foundation will be joined by Gail Torres, RB, MS, RD, Director of Communications at NFK and their Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Joe Vassalotti. Gail is a nurse and nutritionist who had worked in healthcare for over 25 years before joining the National Kidney Foundation 6 years ago. Dr. Vassalotti is also an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology, at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

  • Do you discuss your kidney health w/ your #rheum? If so, do you know your GFR and ACR kidney scores?
  • Do you know if you have any other risk factors for kidney disease, such as family history of kidney disease?
  • If you have kidney disease, does your doctor take that into consideration when prescribing your medications?
  • What can patients do to keep healthy kidneys if they need to take pain medicine or steroids?
  • What are some signs that your treatment plan might be affecting your kidneys?
  • What about diet? What nutrition tips do you have to keep your kidneys healthy and flares under control?
